Off-Leash Dog Beaches
Ocean Beach Dog Beach

If you’ve been to San Diego, you probably know Ocean Beach, but you may not know that it also has a designated Dog Beach. At the northernmost point, past the bike path and near the San Diego River, you’ll find a long sandy spit perfect for a sunny day with your furry friend.
Within the designated off-leash area, dogs are welcome to roam freely 24 hours a day, making it one of the few places in San Diego where pups can play in the surf without time restrictions.
The area also has pet-friendly restaurants and local shops, so feel free to explore after beach time. Invite friends and their dogs for even more fun.
You’ll find parking for this dog beach on the western end of West Point Loma Blvd. Just don’t forget your doggy bags in the car!

Dog Run Beach (Coronado Island Dog Beach)
Dog Run Beach is at the northern end of Coronado Beach, a popular spot for San Diego locals. It’s a great surfing spot for both humans and dogs who love the waves. In fact, a quick search online will show plenty of videos of dogs riding the surf at Dog Run Beach!
While leash rules are strictly enforced outside the designated area, dogs are welcome to roam off-leash once you reach the official Dog Beach zone. When you’ve had your fill of fun in the sun, leash your pet back up and walk a short distance to enjoy lunch or dinner down the street at Hotel Del Coronado.
You’ll find parking directly outside of the naval base entrance on the north end of Ocean Blvd.

Fiesta Island
You may know Fiesta Island for the wild parties and crowds it draws throughout the Spring and Summer months, as locals pull their cars onto the beaches and float in the water for hours. What you may not know is that it is also a great place to spend a day with your dog.
For those unfamiliar, Fiesta Island is a spit of land that stretches out into Mission Bay, where visitors can drive out and park for the day. While this is great fun for humans, it’s an even better time for dogs, who are welcome to spend the day playing and swimming as they please.
Located in Mission Bay Park, Fiesta Island features a leash-optional area that includes all shoreline and interior spaces, making it one of the top dog-friendly beaches in San Diego. However, dogs are never allowed in the California Least Tern nesting sites (enclosed by locked gates year-round) or the Youth Aquatic Center/Campground. Two buffer zones around the nesting sites are also closed annually from April 15 through September 15.
Fiesta Island is excellent for furry friends because no busy streets surround it, and the island’s bounds keep dogs safely contained.
Del Mar Dog Beach
North Beach, Del Mar, is an extremely popular spot for dog owners and their pets as it is the only dog-friendly beach within city limits. If you’re unsure where to take your pet, head between 29th Street and Solana Beach. Pack a picnic lunch and umbrella to make a day of your excursion, but make sure to keep an eye on your food around so many nosey pups.
Because these beaches have a wide dog area, many owners love watching their dogs run and play freely without being cramped. If your pet prefers a less crowded environment, this is probably the spot for you. Plus, there is nothing to boost the mood like watching happy dogs gallop along the beautiful beach cliffs.
During the off-season (the day after Labor Day through June 15), dogs can roam off-leash between 29th Street and the Solana Beach border. During peak season (June 16 through Labor Day), the rules tighten up: off-leash dogs are only allowed from dawn to 8:00 AM on North Beach, and must be leashed the rest of the day. Between Powerhouse Park and 29th Street, dogs are not permitted at all during peak season.
On-Leash Dog Beaches
Fortunately, the city also has several on-leash dog beaches where you can enjoy the surf and sand with your pup. We will guide you through the on-leash dog beaches in San Diego, along with the specific rules for each beach.
Note: All dogs must be on a 6-foot leash and under the owner’s control.
San Diego County
Dog owners can bring their pets to San Diego County beaches during certain hours, but they must keep them leashed.
City of San Diego
Generally, owners can bring their dogs on City of San Diego beaches:
April 1 – Oct 31: Before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM
Nov 1 – Mar 31: Before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM
California Department of Parks and Recreation
Generally, no dogs are allowed on California State Park beaches. However, there are exceptions — Cardiff State Beach permits leashed dogs in certain areas (see below).
La Jolla Shores
The City of San Diego beach rules apply at La Jolla Shores.
Owners can bring their dogs before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM from April 1st to October 31st, and before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM from November 1st to March 31st.
Pacific Beach & Mission Beach & Mission Bay
Dogs are allowed on the beach, boardwalk, or adjacent parks in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM from April 1st to October 31st, and before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM from November 1st to March 31st.
Mission Bay follows the same rules.
Remember to follow posted signs and hours for on-leash dog access. Some visitors have received tickets for letting dogs off-leash or missing seasonal time changes.
Cardiff State Beach
Cardiff State Beach is a dog-friendly beach where dogs are allowed on-leash in areas like Cardiff Reef and Seaside (south of Tower 16). Gates open at 7:00 AM and close at sunset.
Imperial Beach
Unlike other nearby beaches, Imperial Beach has its own set of dog rules.
Dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM from April 1st to October 31st, and before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM from November 1st to March 31st.
Owners cannot bring dogs between Imperial Beach Boulevard and Palm Avenue, and on the pier.
