Best Breweries in San Diego

San Diego isn’t just a great beer city — it’s the beer city. With over 150 craft breweries packed into one county, SD has been the craft beer capital of America for decades, and the scene shows zero signs of slowing down. From hop-forward legends that helped define the West Coast IPA to neighborhood taprooms pouring experimental sours and barrel-aged stouts, there’s a brewery for every palate and every vibe.

We’ve narrowed it down to 12 breweries that represent the best of what San Diego has to offer — the ones worth building a day around. Whether you’re a hop head, a stout loyalist, or just someone who likes drinking good beer in cool spaces, this list has you covered. And if you’re planning a brewery crawl, check out our neighborhood guide to figure out which area to hit first.

1. Stone Brewing

Stone Brewing needs no introduction — they’re the brewery that put San Diego on the national craft beer map, and after nearly three decades, they’re still one of the best. Their flagship Escondido location is a full-blown destination: a one-acre beer garden, an eclectic bistro menu (try the Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts), and 36+ beers on tap including their iconic Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard.

The Liberty Station location is equally impressive — housed in a converted Navy mess hall with indoor/outdoor dining, bocce ball, and an outdoor cinema space. Both locations pour brewery-exclusive releases you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re visiting from out of town, Stone is the pilgrimage. If you’re local, it’s the reliable classic.

Locations: Escondido (flagship) | Liberty Station, Point Loma

2. AleSmith Brewing Company

AleSmith has been quietly dominating the global craft beer scene from their Miramar facility for over 27 years. They currently rank in the top 10 out of 33,000+ breweries worldwide — and their legendary Speedway Stout alone justifies that ranking. The tasting room doubles as one of San Diego’s largest, and the brewery itself is a state-of-the-art operation you can peek into while you sip.

Their range is impressive: from balanced blonde ales to hop-forward IPAs to rich, complex barrel-aged stouts. No food kitchen on-site, but rotating food trucks park outside (usually pizza and burritos — the perfect brewery pairing). AleSmith is the kind of brewery that beer nerds fly to San Diego specifically to visit.

Location: Miramar

3. Ballast Point

Ballast Point has been brewing in San Diego since 1992 and created one of the most recognizable IPAs in craft beer history: the Sculpin. Their Little Italy R&D brewpub is the place to visit — 50+ beers on tap, a globally inspired pub menu (pretzel bites with beer cheese, truffle buffalo wings), and a patio where you can watch planes fly into the airport overhead.

Beyond the Sculpin, try the Aloha Sculpin, Watermelon Dorado, or the classic Calico Amber Ale. Note: the original Miramar tasting room closed in December 2025, so Little Italy is now the flagship SD location. It’s walkable from tons of other Little Italy restaurants and bars, making it easy to build a full evening around it.

Location: Little Italy

4. Modern Times Beer

Modern Times has been through some turbulence (the original Point Loma brewery closed in 2024), but the brand has reinvented itself with a constellation of new San Diego venues. The North Park tasting room is still pouring, and their new downtown concept Timestead (opened late 2025) serves Modern Times beers alongside guest selections and a full bar.

What makes Modern Times special is the range: they do hazy IPAs, fruited sours, barrel-aged stouts, and some of the best coffee-infused beers in the game. Their coffee division runs the Cathedral of Caffeination in North Park, where you can get cold brew, flash-chilled, and barrel-aged coffees on tap. It’s the most creatively ambitious brewery in San Diego, and the new chapter looks promising.

Locations: North Park | Encinitas | Downtown (Timestead)

5. Societe Brewing Company

Societe is the brewer’s brewery — the one that other brewers in San Diego drink at after their own shifts. Their Kearny Mesa taproom is industrial-chic with a focus that’s 100% on the beer. No gimmicks, no food trucks, no TV screens. Just meticulously crafted ales and lagers that consistently rank among the best in the state.

The Pupil IPA is one of the most perfectly balanced West Coast IPAs you’ll find anywhere, and The Apprentice is a silky smooth pale ale that converts people who think they don’t like craft beer. Their Belgian-style and barrel-aged programs are equally strong. Societe is where you go when you want to focus on what’s in the glass.

Location: Kearny Mesa

6. North Park Beer Co.

North Park has one of the densest brewery concentrations in San Diego, and North Park Beer Co. sits right at the center of it. Their spacious taproom and patio on 30th Street is the ideal launching pad for a North Park brewery crawl — or a destination in its own right. The beer list rotates constantly, with a strong lineup of IPAs, lagers, and seasonal releases.

The food menu is legit (not an afterthought), and they frequently host live music and community events. It’s the kind of neighborhood brewery where you run into people you know and end up staying way longer than planned. From here, you can walk to Belching Beaver, Thorn Brewing, and half a dozen other taprooms.

Location: North Park (30th Street)

7. Pizza Port

Pizza Port has been a San Diego institution since 1987, and the formula is devastatingly simple: great beer, great pizza, no pretension. Their multiple locations (Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Ocean Beach, Bressi Ranch) each brew their own beers on-site, so the tap list is different depending on which one you visit. The IPA game is strong across the board, and their award cabinet is absurd.

The vibe is aggressively casual — order at the counter, grab a number, find a table, and wait for some of the best brewery pizza on the West Coast. It’s loud, it’s crowded, and you’ll leave happy. The OB location has the most beach-town energy. The Solana Beach original is where it all started.

Locations: Solana Beach | Carlsbad | Ocean Beach | Bressi Ranch

8. Belching Beaver

Belching Beaver made a name for themselves with the Peanut Butter Milk Stout — a beer so good it basically created its own category. Their flavor innovation goes beyond gimmicks though; the brewery consistently produces creative, well-executed beers from hazy New England-style IPAs to fruited sours.

Their North Park pub is the most accessible location for a brewery crawl (you can hop to North Park Beer Co. and Thorn Brewing on foot), and the Vista headquarters is worth the drive for the full taproom experience. Oceanside location too if you’re up the coast.

Locations: North Park | Vista | Oceanside

9. Kilowatt Brewing

Kilowatt is the small-batch brewery that doubles as an adult playground. The tasting rooms are filled with giant games, arcade vibes, and rotating local artwork — including black light art you can view with provided 3D glasses. It’s the most fun brewery atmosphere in San Diego, and the beer backs it up: the Guava IPA, Hazezoose hazy, and Chocolate Macadamia Stout all have loyal followings.

Three locations: Clairemont (main), Ocean Beach (bring outside food — they welcome it), and Oceanside. Each taproom features rotating art from local artists. If you’re the type who gets bored sitting still at a brewery, Kilowatt is your spot.

Locations: Clairemont | Ocean Beach | Oceanside

10. Viewpoint Brewing Co.

Viewpoint earns its name: the huge outdoor patio overlooks the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar, and it’s one of the most scenic brewery settings in San Diego. The beer is solid — rotating taps of citrusy IPAs, sours, amber ales, plus hard kombucha and cider for the non-beer crowd. But honestly, you’re here for the patio.

Unlike most breweries that feel like afterthought food menus, Viewpoint runs a full kitchen: smoky brisket, adobada fries, burgers, weekend brunch. Portion sizes are generous. It’s a great pit stop on a drive along the coast, and the sunset views are genuinely special.

Location: Del Mar

11. OB Brewery

OB Brewery was the first microbrewery to set down roots on historic Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, and it fits the neighborhood perfectly. Three levels of open seating, a rooftop deck with panoramic ocean views, and on-site brewed beers ranging from IPAs and pale ales to experimental stuff like their Jalapeno Saison.

The food menu features burgers and beer wings, and they regularly collaborate with other local breweries on limited releases. The rooftop is the real draw — there aren’t many places in SD where you can drink a locally brewed beer while watching the sun set over the Pacific. Get there before sunset for the best seats.

Location: Ocean Beach

12. Pure Project

Pure Project is the brewery for people who care about where their beer comes from. Their focus on sustainability and quality ingredients has earned them a devoted following and a reputation as one of SD’s most thoughtful breweries. The Murky hazy IPA is exceptional, and their sour and wild ale programs push boundaries without losing drinkability.

Multiple locations including Balboa Park (inside the park itself — hard to beat that setting), Bankers Hill, and Carlsbad. Each taproom has a distinct vibe but shares the same commitment to quality. If you’re into the “farm-to-glass” movement, Pure Project is your brewery.

Locations: Balboa Park | Bankers Hill | Carlsbad

Plan Your Brewery Crawl

The best brewery crawls in San Diego cluster by neighborhood. North Park has the densest concentration (North Park Beer Co., Belching Beaver, Thorn Brewing, and more within walking distance). Miramar is “Brewery Row” with AleSmith, Societe, and a dozen others. And the coast has Viewpoint, Pizza Port, and OB Brewery.

Pair your crawl with our guides to sports bars, live music venues, and the best tacos (because you’ll need food). And if you need a ride, check out one of the many brewery tour companies that handle the driving so you can focus on the drinking.
